Further details: Ardnamona, on Lough Eske under the Blue Stack mountains is described in the Topographical Dictionary of Ireland 1837, as "one of the most picturesque domains in rural Ireland". The writer Violet French was captivated: "I first saw Ardnamona from the lake on a fine August evening, romantic and picturesque with an appealing beauty which clings around the heart as if it belonged to a dream world". Ardnamona has glorious gardens, planted by Sir Arthur Wallace in the 1880s. Many of the seeds and cuttings came from the Imperial Gardens at Peking and the palace gardens in Kathmandu. It is designated a National Heritage Garden and has been described as "wild gardening at its most exuberant and refined; a Himalayan mountain slope cloaked with a primeval rhododendron forest, 60 feet tall, with a carpet of leaves underfoot". |
