Palazzo Portole is a large property on the edge of a small hilltop town in Istria, which is often described as Croatia's Tuscany. There are 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms which can accommodate 10-12 guests. The Tower which is an integral part of the building holds one large and one smaller bedroom, the Library and has a roof terrace accessible from inside the property. This affords fabulous panoramas of the terraces of olives and vines, the forests and mountains which surround Oprtalj. The gardens which are full of roses, drifts of lavender and rosemary, jasmine, agapanthus and yuccas are designed to give a flavour of a classic English garden while also reflecting the Mediterranean climate of the area. Inside the main gates in the south-facing flower garden there is a swimming pool hidden behind a high bay hedge. Under the eastern wall the shaded Loggia with a stone barbecue and large antique-tiled table is the perfect alfresco dining room. On the north side of the Palazzo are arcades shaded by roses and vines and a vegetable garden with salads and herbs for guests to pick.
