Lisheen castle was bought by the Everard family in the early 90's. It had been burnt down in 1921 by the old IRA and lay in ruin until 1995 when the Everard family took on the total restoration project which lasted a total of 5 years from 1995-2000. Today the castle is available for luxury weekly rental. Most of our guests are from the states and the resounding feedback is that the castle feels like home to them for the week with all the modern conveniences and they simply wish they didn't have to leave. We were doing a combination family genealogy and sightseeing trip to the Thurles area since a part of my wives family and my family originated in the area just miles apart from each other. We had a mixed group of people with us, some family, some friends, and friends of friends. Because of the beautiful castle we were to stay in, and the attention to detail that Zane paid to everything we were able to relax and get to know our new friends on the very first night. We had a “package “ tour put together by Zane which included transfers from the airport in Dublin and back at the end of our stay. We were picked up and hit the ground running with tours of Dublin. When we got to “Our Castle” , Zane met us there and gave us a tour, then literally turned over the the keys to the castle to us and that was our home for the week! Each day a motor coach picked us up after a traditional Irish breakfast prepared for us by chefs that fixed us breakfast and dinner each day, and took us to amazing places. Everyone associate with Lisheen Castle were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful ( we had one person needing a wheelchair), and professional, we felt like were with family the entire time. I hope we can go back there again in the future.
I don’t even know where to start! After looking at the beautiful pictures of the castle online, expectations were high. After speaking with Zane several times, I was so looking forward to our visit. Our first view of the castle from the drive in sent a chill through me and I had even higher hopes of what was to come. Walking in the front door and being given the grand tour complete with background story from Zane, completely erased any doubts I had, and far exceeded my expectations! It is hard to describe the feeling of being in something with such history and yet the comfortable feeling of home. All of the modern amenities are incorporated in such a subtle way. The beauty of the period established in every detail of each room.....we had a great time exploring and enjoying each one! I can’t give a favorite, as there was something very special about each one. I am a baker, and really loved coming down in the morning to enjoy making breakfast in the amply stocked kitchen! And the Aga stove! I could have spent the entire week in just that room!
The grounds are so beautiful as well! You could get lost in the surroundings, taking in the lovely land, tennis courts....playground....flowers, trees! So serene!
Zane was a wonderful host! He was so helpful and every recommendation went above and beyond....the charming town of Thurles just a few minutes away was lovely. Great pubs, restaurants, train station and supermarket. Everyone we encountered was so friendly and added an element and example of culture we really enjoyed.
If you are considering a trip to Lisheen Castle, do not hesitate!
We enjoyed everything about it and it was worth every penny, and then some! Even my teenagers had such a great time they didn’t want to leave and are begging to go back! I’m right there with them!
Ten cousins came to Ireland and stayed at Lisheen Castle for a week. It was even more than we expected. Thank you Zane !
Our stay at Lisheen castle was amazing! We rented the castle for our group of 10 cousins. Many of us had not seen each other in years. The castle provided the perfect setting for strengthening our family bond.
The castle itself is incredibly beautiful! You can see the pride of ownership in every detail in each room. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated, as are all the rooms. There is even a suit of armor! We took turns being the King /Queen at the dining table. The library was the perfect place to gather in the evening for visiting and games.
Zane, the master of the castle, was a gracious host. He made sure we had everything we needed. We booked the local tour company, Glasheen’s Tours, for the week. Our guide, Mary, was phenomenal. She helped craft our itinerary so we got to see everything we wanted with time at the castle as well. She was so knowledgeable about all things Irish. We had such a great time with her and our driver, Thomas (her brother).
We also hired the chef to prepare some of our meals. Ursula prepared the most amazing dinners for us. Everything was delicious and desserts were out of this world. Breakfasts were hearty and cooked to order. We had one member of our group who needed gluten free meals and Ursula was so careful and attentive to his needs.
I can’t say enough good things about Lisheen castle. It is the perfect way to experience Ireland and we will never forget it. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
What a wonderful week in Ireland. When Zane handed us the keys to the castle we knew we were in for a great adventure. One member of our group developed a medical issue during our stay. Zane personally took her to a local hospital and stayed with her all day. Our tour guides took special care to make sure that the lady was able to enjoy all the remaining activities. The food was wonderful and I have tried to recreate some of dishes. I wish they would put out a cook book! The 2 young men who served our meals were delightful and our chefs were top notch. I would go back for another stay in a heartbeat. Thank you Zane for making our trip so great!
A group of 12 of us stayed at Lisheen Castle and took advantage of the Ireland Tour package. We loved everything about our stay! The castle is gorgeous and we were cared for like royalty. The breakfast and dinners were delicious, the staff were so friendly and accommodating, the tour guides and drivers were knowledgeable and fun... they exceeded all of our expectations in every way! I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Everyone had a wonderful visit. I hope to be able to return one day.
Our Murphy Kelley family trip to connect with our Irish heritage found a perfect home for a week in Lisheen Castle. From the endless breakfasts, the amazing visits to all parts of the country, to the sumptuous dinners with never empty wine glasses, we could not have been more spoiled. Zane is a warm, generous host and now a valued friend. We have the best memories for life.
Our family trip to Lisheen Castle was in June 2018 and it included 12 adults and one baby. We are happy to report that all of those previous reviews we read were true. This castle was exactly as stated.
We have just a few new thoughts to help pay it forward for others.
1. Rest assured that Lisheen Castle is a legitimate castle. It is not part castle part hotel or part house. There is even a wall chart in the sunroom showing the genealogy of the original owners complete with pictures! Absolutely amazing to look at.
2. Pleasant sleeping arrangements were key for our group and luckily for us, the beds at the castle did not disappoint! They were all very comfortable with good bedding, great pillows and the bedrooms themselves, are spread across the entire second floor which is massive. The kitchen and country dining room are located on the first floor which enabled our early risers a chance to gather for breakfast and have conversations without disturbing our late sleepers.
3. There are many interesting spots to gather in the castle. The library with it’s cozy peet fireplace was our favorite and the outdoor patio complete with dining set our second. Our wine and cheese parties outside allowed us to sit and view the extensive front property while being perfectly situated to watch sunsets. Our group was also drawn to the neighbors friendly cows. Every night they lined up along the rock wall waiting for us to come over and visit them. They were the prettiest dairy cows we have ever seen!
4. We made the mistake of having a full agenda for each day to a popular tourist site that required early starts, long drives and late returns. Towards the end of our week we asked Zane for ideas and his recommendations were spot on. Our group found them every bit as enjoyable so save some time for a day or two of that.
5. While the kitchen at the castle is fully outfitted for cooking and we had several great cooks in our group, we advise considering other options. The time spent sourcing food, prepping it, cooking it and then cleaning it all up for our group was ridiculous. We found local pubs such as the “Monks” and “Murphy’s” to be better alternatives. They had great atmosphere, friendly people and fantastic food choices making those nights more enjoyable.
If you have ever dreamt of staying in an authentic castle for a week, surrounded by private and rolling green hills and imagining what it might feel like to live like royalty, this is your place.
The Everard family allowed our family to experience the trip of a lifetime by giving us the keys to the whole castle. No hotel could ever deliver that!
We booked a week at Lisheen Castle with our family and friends for our 30th Wedding Anniversary. Cannot say enough about how wonderful Zane and his staff were to us! The castle is beautiful! Rooms spacious, Beds comfortable, beautiful grounds and landscaping, we never felt crowded!
Due to our group size and the difficulty in touring the country with numerous rental cars, we booked the Tour Package. We started each day with a delicious, hearty breakfast, then on to our private bus to the scheduled tours around Central, Southern and even Western Ireland, returning back to the castle by early evening to enjoy another delicious 3 course meal! The food was phenomenal! One evening we were driven to dinner at Chez Hans restaurant in Cashel...outstanding! Another evening we were taken to a Pub in Thurles, so much fun! Another evening at the castle Zane had a harpist serenade us while we ate. It was truly a vacation...no cooking or cleaning, just enjoying the beauty of the Irish countryside and the people. Our group ranged in age from 21-70 and everyone found something they enjoyed. We would go again in a heartbeat! If you have the opportunity GO!!!
Our group of (15) were treated like royalty. We did the package which included daily excursions and meals (breakfast/dinner). The chefs and their assistants were very friendly, funny and provided a loving family oriented level of service. You can tell they too love being a part of the Lisheen Castle hospitality.
We didn't have to plan a thing or lift a finger for meals which provided a relaxed, stress free vacation for all.
If you have never spoiled yourself on vacation....pick Ireland, stay at the Lisheen Castle and let the Zane handled everything!
Thanks again guys for an awesome stay!!!!
