This splendid Maison de Maitre dates back to 1825. The six bedroom six bathroom accommodation is across two floors and amounts to 420 square metres or 4,520 square feet. Total capacity is 26 guests. It is a very large house!
The house was originally the residence of a Huguenot family called Robillard, (whose initials are over the main entrance gate) who were prominent characters in the local region. Now it is an elegant country house with lots of modern facilities but retaining the character consistent with its history.
The front faces the sunrise and the back the sunset so it is always light and airy. It does get pretty warm here in the summer however with shutters on all the windows and doors and insulated walls over two feet thick it is easily regulated. Should you be thinking of a winter break then the house is fully centrally heated and has two fires as well so is toasty warm.
Facing the garden and with views across the valley there is a huge country kitchen with a handmade solid oak table which seats twelve and there are other tables which can be added to it to seat everyone. There is also an eight foot breakfast bar with stools which is great for feeding the children and for sitting at with a glass of Pineau (local fortified wine which is served chilled) while someone else makes the dinner. There is also a massive Italian wood burning stove fitted.

There is a flatscreen tv in the kitchen with a UK Freeview system and DVD player.
Across the other side of the entrance hallway is the large lounge with ornate carved ceiling and views across the garden and pool. In this lovely room are three sofas and a selection of armchairs arranged around the original fireplace.
The house also has two bedrooms on the ground floor. One has a king sized bed with an en-suite bathroom with full sized bath and shower over with toilet, bidet and twin sinks. The other has a king sized bed with two additional singles, this is intended primarily to be a children’s room as it has a big TV, DVD player etc. The shower room with toilet and sink for this bedroom is also on the ground floor, the other side of the entrance hall.
Upstairs there are a further four bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities.
The master suite, which faces the back garden, and has a view across the valley; has a king sized bed and a huge bathroom with large corner bath, huge shower, toilet and double sink. The other back bedroom (with same view) has a king sized bed with two additional singles, and an en-suite bathroom with a large corner bath which has a shower attachment, bidet, sink and toilet. The third bedroom facing the front, has two three foot singles which can be zipped together to make a queen sized bed, and an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower over, plus a sink and toilet. The fourth bedroom, also at the front, has a king sized bed with a full sized cot. Again there is an en-suite bathroom, with bath and shower over and separate to that, an en-suite toilet. We have a travel cot as well, do let us know if you need it.
The house has wifi internet access, and flat screen TV’s with video renders to access the 250 films on the house NAS drive. There are also multi-region DVD players and a SONOS music system with some 10,000 songs which can be played throughout the house if desired. Domestic equipment includes combination microwave/convection/grill oven, large additional oven, dishwasher, washing machine (there is a large airer in the kitchen for drying) plus toaster, kettle and everything else you would expect. The bed linen is all Egyptian cotton with hypo-allergenic pillows and duvet covers, the cutlery is Viners and the crockery is Denbywear, so you can be assured that everything is of the highest quality.
Outside on the terrace there is another large table seating twelve and a large drum style BBQ with side racks and a full set of tools in stainless steel. This is where we spend most of our time in the summer as there is shade from the acacia trees and a safe playing area for the children. Also from here (and from the kitchen too) there is a clear view of the swimming pool.
From the main house one looks over the gardens to the pool. Also on the way to the pool is the table tennis room and trampoline. Many a table tennis competition has been bravely fought!
We also have a lake with a seating area and fishing for carp.

Delightfully spacious and comfortable and can easily be kept cool in hot weather. The property was clean, well maintained and very well appointed. Within easy reach of St Jean d’Angely. We have stayed in many properties in this area which we love….this is our favourite
Masses of space, a brilliant location, lovely grounds and a huge pool: a superb setting for gathering family and friends
From a quiet country road in gently rolling countryside, pass through wrought iron gates up a driveway into five acres of woodland, lawns and sunflowers.
We stayed in this gorgeous Maison de Maître which has masses of space inside but also outside.
Petit Champagné is perfect for spending sultry days in sun and shade, lazing on a lounger with a book while the little ones play in the huge pool.
The house (also called Chateau) has enormous high-ceilinged rooms, a large kitchen, ideal for big family meals, and a flexible range of bedrooms.
Bathrooms are a mix of modern and more traditional. Décor is neutral throughout with touches of period character: cornices, exposed beams and stone fireplaces.
Rise early and watch hares and deer from the south-facing rooms before breakfasting on the terrace.
Historic St Jean D’Angely, riding, cycling, fishing and good walking are all nearby, so too are the exquisite Île de Ré and the beaches of the dazzling Atlantic coast. Shops and restaurants are just ten minutes’ drive.
This is an excellent, very well furnished and very well maintained property in delightful grounds and in the interesting area of Poitou Charente.
Thanks Paul
A group of 12 of us (family & friends) stayed in July. We had a fabulous relaxing time at the Chateau.
On arrival Karele greeted us and gave us the tour. All the rooms are impressively sized (the website photos belie the true scale of the place)
Every meal was enjoyed on the terrace which has the perfect aspect over the grounds & pool.
A lot of thought has gone into making the place well setup for holiday enjoyment – e.g. the indoor & outdoor games, barbeque, exterior lighting, multiroom sound system (including outside speakers) to the kitchen equipment and beer & wine chilling capacity!
The pool was very impressive and any fear we had before arrival of it not being heated were soon swept away. We spent many happy hours in and around the pool.
The whole grounds are very private and we felt relaxed that the party atmosphere we were enjoying was not inconveniencing neighbours.
Thanks Jamieson for sharing your lovely home. We shall return.
Thanks Charles, look forward to having you back
